Use this guide if you manage how an AI employee appears or sounds in the Playground or a public experience. You will choose from the appearances available to your account, create an image-based Character when needed, and test the complete experience before assigning it to visitors.
Feature availability, voice choices, and limits can vary by account. Treat the choices and guidance shown in your workspace as current.
Before you begin
- Decide whether the experience needs an animated companion from Avatars or an image-based persona from Characters.
- Prepare an image you are allowed to use. A clear subject with space around it is easier to crop and place against a background.
- Prepare a background with enough clear space around the Character, then plan to check it on both wide and narrow screens.
- If you will create a voice, use a quiet recording with one speaker. Only use a recording you own or have clear permission from the speaker to use.
- Note any public experience or phone setup that already uses the Character or voice you plan to change.
Steps
1. Open Customization
Use the workspace navigation to open Customization. Its areas include Avatars, Characters, and Voices.
2. Browse Avatars
Open Avatars to search and browse the animated companions available to your account. You choose the active companion later from conversation Preferences or during a supported setup flow.
3. Open Customization → Characters
Open Characters, then choose the Character area. Select the control to create a Character and upload the image you prepared.
4. Crop the Character image
Position the crop around the person or subject and confirm the crop. Keep important details away from the edge so they remain visible at different screen sizes.

5. Name and save the Character
Enter the Character name and any behaviour details requested by the form, then save. Wait for the new Character to appear before trying to assign it.
You can edit a Character later from its menu. Review the image, name, and available settings before saving a change.

6. Add a background image when needed
Use the background area on the Characters page to upload, crop, name, edit, or delete a background for supported Characters. Choose an image that does not make the Character or conversation controls difficult to see.
7. Open Voices
Open Voices to search and preview the voice library. If voice creation is available to your account, use either an uploaded recording or the microphone recording flow, then add the name, language, type, and description requested on screen.
Stop recording and close microphone access when you finish. Do not create an imitation of another person without clear permission.
8. Assign the appearance in Preferences
Start or open a conversation, then use Preferences where available to choose the companion or Character, scene or background, and voice. Wait for each choice to finish loading.

9. Test the complete experience
Test text and voice separately. Check the opening message, spoken response, Character framing, background contrast, and controls on a wide screen and a phone-sized screen. If the appearance will be public, repeat the test through the published experience before launch.
Expected result
The selected appearance loads with the intended background or scene, and the chosen voice plays clearly in a supported conversation. The Character remains well framed and the conversation controls remain readable at the screen sizes you tested.
Status meanings
Appearance does not use one shared status across every screen. Treat a saved selection and a successful private preview as confirmation. If a screen shows loading or processing, wait before testing; if it shows failed or an error, keep the current safe setup and retry only after checking the file, permission, or selection.
Usage credit impact
This article does not define a fixed credit charge for browsing, uploading, previewing, or speaking. Supported activity may use usage credits depending on the feature and account. Review any value shown in your workspace and check your current balance before extended voice testing or a public launch.
Information stored or shared
- Uploaded Character and background images are saved to your workspace so they can be selected again.
- A voice recording, its descriptive details, and the resulting voice may be saved to your account when you use the voice-creation flow.
- When assigned to a public experience, the Character, background, or voice can be presented to visitors who open that experience.
- Do not place private customer information, secret values, or other sensitive material in an image, file name, voice description, or recording.
Limits and permanent actions
- Available companions, voices, creation controls, and limits can vary by account.
- A Character that is active or assigned may need to be removed from its current use before it can be deleted.
- Replace a voice in every public experience or phone setup before deleting that voice.
- Deleting an owned Character, background, or voice can interrupt experiences that use it. Keep the original permitted source files and confirm every assignment before deleting.
- A browser or operating system may continue showing microphone permission after recording. Close the recording session and revoke permission if it is no longer needed.
Common problems and recovery
The Character does not appear. Open Preferences, select the intended appearance and scene, and wait for loading to finish. Refresh and try again if the selection remains unavailable.
The image is framed badly. Edit or recreate the Character with more space around the subject, then test at both wide and narrow sizes.
The microphone does not work. Allow microphone access, close other browser tabs or applications using it, confirm the selected input, and refresh the page.
The voice connects but no sound plays. Check speaker volume, browser sound permission, the selected voice, and whether another audio session is active.
Deletion is blocked. Find where the Character or voice is assigned, replace it there, then return to Customization and try again.
Next step
Use the Playground guide to test the appearance in a private conversation, then follow Publish and manage a shared experience when it is ready for visitors.
